In May 2020, when COVID-19 disrupted lives and strained health systems across the world, Nigeria also faced severe challenges. Borno State recorded a growing number of cases, and patients were placed in isolation centres across various locations. With movement restrictions in place and many people unable to work or support themselves, the situation demanded urgent humanitarian support. Mon Club International carried out a rapid assessment to determine how best to assist those affected. Based on the findings, MCI initiated a daily fruit support intervention to help improve the nutrition and recovery of patients in isolation. Assorted fresh fruits were delivered each day to isolation centres across Borno State from May to July 2020. Alongside this direct assistance, Mon Club International also contributed to risk-communication efforts. A large billboard was installed at the entrance point into Maiduguri to raise COVID-19 awareness and inform the public on preventive actions such as mask-wearing, handwashing, and social distancing.
